Katerina looked down at her watch seeing the time, looking back down at the book open in front of her in the records room of the county courthouse. She had been planning spend a few minutes reviewing a property dispute case, which in a town like Ellisville could go pretty far back, and now she found herself about to be late for her other job. Katerina shut the book quickly, writing down the page number in her notes, and picking up her legal pads before rushing out of the dimly lit room, and up the flight of stairs to the main floor of the courthouse. Without acknowledging anyone, Katerina rushed out of the building, her heels clicking on the tiles floors as she moved at the pace of an almost run.
A couple blocks down the road she found her Jeep Grand Cherokee parked, unlocking the doors and throwing her notes into the floor of the front seat while grabbing the oversized purse that sat in the seat itself where she had a change of clothes for her second job. She had even parked closer to her other job than the courthouse, because she could walk to work, and change into her other clothes once she was inside the building. Katerina had worked multiple jobs in the past, which meant she knew how to handle the situation by this point, and how to keep her boss from hating her for coming in late once in a while, and using his office as her own personal changing room.
Rushing down the street to the front of the bar, Katerina was happy people weren't rushing in yet, because then she would have to walk all the way around the back of the building, but instead she simply got a nod from the bouncer, and rushed in to find a few small groups of people in the lounges, and one bartender working, where she was supposed to be helping with opening for the Friday night. Katerina glanced around for her manager as she walked past the bar and around to the office, finding him sitting with his back to the desk, looking out the door straight at her as she turned the corner, as if he was waiting and knew she would be late.
"I know, I'm late, but property disputes in this town go back way too many years, and the records room is all the way in the basement of the courthouse," Katerina acknowledged her tardiness as she stepped into the office, throwing her bag on the small couch and turning back to her boss, who was beginning to stand up. "I promise I will make up for it with the amount of drinks I sell tonight, as soon as I get into my other clothes," Katerina was careful with her word choice, knowing the comments he would make if she said something about getting out of her work clothes. It was part of working as a bartender, she had to deal with the comments of her manager when she came in late or used his office to change.
"You could just let me watch, then I could ignore you showing up late," Katerina shook her head at his words. She was used to hearing it from him on a regular basis, so she just put up with it, and figured if it ever got really bad, she had a law degree she could use against him, and she would remind him of it.
"I would hate for my coworkers to think I receive special treatment for sleeping with the boss, so I guess things will just have to stay the way they are," Katerina pushed him out the door, allowing the door to close before quickly changing out of her dress pants and blouse to a pair of jeans and v-neck t-shirt. Katerina threw her other clothes into her bag before rushing out of the door to find her manager had already moved on to something else he had to do, so she could return to the task she had at hand to get to work selling some drinks to the lovely people of her hometown, hoping none of them would be the people who hated her. So far she only had a couple of brief encounters when at work, but her fear was that one day someone would get too confrontational with her while she was trying to make money to afford rent, and other living expenses. She wouldn't consider bothering someone in their place of work, but Katerina knew no one would give her the same luxury.
Katerina took her place behind the bar, pulling her hair into a ponytail on the back of her head before going and pouring herself a cup of water. It was something she did every night to make people believe she was the girl drinking behind the bar, but in reality, she was just staying hydrated.
Within a couple of hours of her work night, Katerina found herself confronted with the thing she wanted to deal with least. In front of her, ordering a beer, stood one of David's best friends from high school. Katerina just smiled as she picked up a cup and went to fill it with the cheap lager he had ordered. Katerina was going to be an adult about the whole situation. She didn't want to make a scene just because she was engaged to his friend, but he was making that difficult, because she knew he was going to do something. There was just something about the smile he had across his face that made Katerina's stomach turn. As she turned and began to reach out to hand him the beer, she felt his hand reach out, but instead of grasping the cup, he tipped it back and the cup spilled all over he shirt.
"I'll have someone else get you another beer, while I go clean up," Katerina pulled a few dry towels from behind the bar to clean up the mess, trying to turn away to go clean herself up.
"Just like the old Kat to leave a mess for others to clean up," Katerina wanted to turn back and just go off about how he didn't know what was going on. She had loved her fiancé, but she also loved her independence, and had a future that was so much more than what she would have faced staying in town.
"I didn't create this one, you did, so I guess I'm leaving it for you to clean up," those words took every ounce of strength Katerina had to say calmly as she turned and walked away, turning the corner so she would be behind the bar in the hallway leading to the office and bathrooms, with it still empty enough no one would see her as she leaned up against the wall, allowing herself to slide down to the ground, feeling overwhelmed by thoughts of her past once again. Every time she felt like she was moving forward, something would come along again and bring her back down, and make her feel like the worst person in the world.
